Kid Jupiter Set The Golden Hinde In Motion

I came to Kid Jupiter late, but their folky indie pop has a way of drawing you back in.

I did not expect to connect with a sound I had long written off. It is a reminder to take more risks. Sometimes they pay off.

Their songs drift, reflective and almost passive, before the occasional surge of energy cuts through.

Any expectations I had of the live show were quickly surpassed.

The night marked the release of their new rock infused track Mar-a-Lago, with earworm lines like, “And if it wasn’t for baby animals, we could all be washed away.”

At times, it was easy to forget the ship was docked at St Mary Overie Dock. The room seemed to move with the music, like the hull itself had slipped its moorings.

The set was tight and intimate, smooth yet sweeping. Each act commanded the space in their own way, but Kid Jupiter filled it completely. Drums, guitars and keys seemed impossibly placed within the hull. The sound was rich, almost oaky, perfectly suited to the exposed timber of the ship.

Last night was a delight. A tight, intimate crowd in the hull of The Golden Hinde, a setting perfectly suited to the sounds of The Pig and Daxi, two standout support acts.

Many in the room were long time fans or friends of the performers, but it did not feel exclusive. There were no strangers here.

I do not think I have ever felt so at home in something so far outside my usual lane.

Even the bar was reasonably priced.

A fitting setting for a genuinely memorable night.
